Christina Milian On Embracing Her Afro-Latina Identity: 'I Am Who I Am'

Christina Milian detailed the challenges of being an Afro-Latina in Hollywood in a conversation with HuffPost Live on Monday.

"Since early, it'd be like, I'm Cuban but [people] didn't get it because I was also brown-skinned, and you usually see a fair-skinned Latino, so it was just like, 'Oh, what are you? Are you black? Are you white?'" she recalled to host Alex Miranda. "I didn't feel like I had to make a choice. I am what I am."

While initially confused by reactions to her racial identity -- "What is there to figure out?" she remembered thinking -- the songstress and star of "Christina Milian Turned Up" came to see the beauty in how varied the Latino community is.

"We're all different, but you have to accept our differences," the "Grandfathered" actress affirmed. "As far as Afro-Cuban [goes], I'm finding more and more that there's people opening their eyes to seeing that. Latinos come in all colors, all shades."

"You should see my mom and her brothers and sisters," Milian continued. "Same parents, but we just vary in color, shapes and sizes. But we're still Latinos -- that doesn't change a damn thing. You can tell it's in the core of our blood."

Texans release quarterback Ryan Mallett after missed flight

The Texans have released quarterback Ryan Mallett after he missed the team’s flight to Miami last weekend, the team announced Tuesday.

Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle​ reported Monday that head coach Bill O’Brien wanted to release Mallett before Sunday’s game against the Dolphins but was overruled by general manager Rick Smith. Releasing Mallett before the game would have left starter Brian Hoyer as Houston’s only quarterback.

Mallett missed the team’s charter on Saturday and had to take a commercial flight to Miami to be with the team. He said later that he missed the flight because he was caught in traffic.

The Texans must now sign another quarterback to back up Hoyer. Tom Savage, last season’s third-string option, is on injured reserve with a shoulder problem.Zac Dysert, previously the third-stringer for the Broncos, is on Houston’s practice squad. ESPN’s Tania Ganguli reports that the Texans want to bring back former Houston back up T.J. Yates, who is a free agent.

Ryan Mallett Released by Texans: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

On the heels of multiple off-field issues bringing his maturity and commitment into question, the Houston Texans decided to cut ties with quarterback Ryan Mallett on Tuesday.  

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle first reported the news, while Mark Berman of Fox 26 confirmed the quarterback's release.

Pro Football Talk reported that Mallett is free to sign with any team since it's just before the Week 8 trade deadline.

According to Berman, the 27-year-old signal-caller missed the team charter flight prior to Houston's Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins and had to book his own flight instead.

Missing the team flight was the final straw, per McClain. McClain also noted that the team sent Mallett home on Monday while they worked everything out.

That wasn't the first time Mallett had an issue with tardiness, as he was reportedly late for a team bus to joint practices with the Washington Redskins during the preseason, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Mallett was nearly cut on the spot after missing the flight to Miami, but according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle, general manager Rick Smith prevented head coach Bill O'Brien from doing so.

The team simply delayed the inevitable, however, as it ultimately released Mallett, who had already lost his starting job to Brian Hoyer.

Wilson noted, per sources, that even those close to Mallett wonder if he will ever "get it".

Mallett has possessed all the necessary physical tools to be an NFLquarterback since his college days at the University of Arkansas. TheNew England Patriots thought enough of him to select him with a third-round pick in 2011 before shipping him to Houston in 2014.

The big, strong-armed quarterback was given every opportunity to be the man in Houston, but he never took full advantage.

In addition to his irresponsibility, Mallett struggled on the field to the tune of 770 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions on the year.

The NFL is so starved for quarterbacks that Houston's decision to cut Mallett speaks volumes about the organization being fed up with his antics.

Despite Mallett's shortcomings, it seems likely that a team will take a chance on him due to his impressive physical abilities.

He is still relatively young and inexperienced in terms of game action at the NFL level, so some coach out there may believe he is capable of harnessing his skill set.

Unless Mallett fully commits to being an NFL quarterback and conducts himself as a professional, though, there probably isn't anyone who can turn his career around.

As first reported by The Houston Chronicle's John McClain, the Texans released Mallett on Tuesday, a day after it was reported that O'Brien was ready to move on from his backup quarterback but was vetoed by general manager Rick Smith. The Houston Chronicle is alsoreporting that T.J. Yates will be brought in to fill the void left by Mallett. Yates previously played for the Texans from 2011-2013 and is remembered for winning a playoff game following the 2011 regular season.

As for Mallett, his two-year run with the Texans will be remembered for his flops and missteps. In August, after Brian Hoyer was named the starter, Mallett missed practice. Then, after being handed the starting job in the regular season, Mallett lost that job when he suffered an injury during a game. Hoyer entered the game and O'Brien stuck with Hoyer even when Mallett clearly wanted to return. Hoyer sulked on the sideline for the remainder of the game.

"The last straw," McClain reported, was the missed flight. Mallett claims traffic caused his absence at the team's charter to Miami. Mallett was forced to fly himself out to the Texans' eventual blowout loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.

On Monday, it was reported by The Houston Chronicle that O'Brien wanted to cut Mallett before Sunday's game, but Smith vetoed that decision. Eventually, O'Brien seems to have won out.

This season, Mallett is completing 53 percent of his passes and is averaging just 5.24 yards per attempt. He's also thrown more interceptions (4) than touchdowns (3). Considering his overall performance and the fact that he never made life easy for the coaching staff, it's no shock to see him let go.
